SPACE RENEGADE
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
After nearly 2 years of development*, hopefully it will have been worth the wait**.
*More like 5 months of incredibly inefficient development.
**It probably won't.
How to play
Move with WASD, aim with the mouse and shoot with the left mouse button. Press Esc to pause.
Destroy all enemies on the screen to proceed to the next wave.
Enemies drop Scrap, a resource that both gives you Exp and heals you if you're damaged. The tougher the enemy, the more Exp their Scrap is worth.
Scrap has a chance of becoming Rare. Rare Scrap provides both more Exp and more healing. The tougher the enemy, the higher the chance their Scrap will be Rare.
Earn enough Exp and you'll level up. Leveling up let's you upgrade a Stat.
You can only upgrade one Stat per category:
- Offensive
- Damage
- Fire Rate
- Defensive
- Max Armor (health)
- Move Speed
- Munitions
- Projectile Size
- Projectile Speed
Fully leveling up a Stat unlocks its Evolution, a unique Upgrade for that Stat.
Defeat the Final Boss on Wave 20 to win.
Playtime & Content
A run takes about 15 minutes to complete. Since there are 3 bosses, it should take roughly 45 minutes to see all the content in the game.
The boss you encounter will either be a boss you haven't seen yet, or if you've seen all of them, one you haven't beaten yet.
Download versions
Same as with my previous game, I have only tested the Windows version of the game. The Mac and Linux versions may not run as intended, if at all.
About
Similarly to my first game, SPACE RENEGADE was made primarily as a means for me to improve as a programmer - making a game that was different from my first one was the top priority, everything else was secondary.
At first, the prospect of making another game was enough to keep me going, but as the design grew more aimless, and my implementations got needlessly complex, and the workload started exceeding expectations, I started losing motivation.
Despite months of work, I wasn't satisfied with either the programming or the design of the game, but had still spent too much time on it to feel comfortable abandoning it. I knew I could finish it, I just didn't know if I could be bothered to. On one hand, a lot of beginners start projects and never finish them (I actually started 5 smaller projects in the process of making this one), but on the other hand, canceling projects that aren't going well is often the smarter call (all 5 aforementioned projects were scrapped).
In the end, I decided to bite the bullet and do my best to finish the game, even if it meant scrapping several planned features and stretching my definition of "good enough". It still served its purpose in helping me improve, and it's still a (hopefully) functional and playable game, albeit mediocre.
